Sodium Methylate (SMO)

Our high-performance alkoxide catalysts are used by a wide variety of companies in markets ranging from biodiesel production, food processing, surfactant manufacture, polymerization of materials to deodorization and improving stability of petroleum distillates like fuel oil and solvents. They are used in commercially important reactions like esterifications, condensations, ring-closures among others.

Biodiesel

Sodium Methylate (SMO) solution is an ideal base catalyst in the production of Biodiesel, as our SMO is produced from caustic and methanol using a proprietary dehydration process. SMO catalyst improves the yield of Biodiesel and reduces the gum formation during the conversion process. Our eco-friendly SMO offers significant compatibility with the Biodiesel process while providing improved cost benefits.

Food

Sodium Methylate anhydrous powder is widely used as a transesterification catalyst in the production of Margarine and Shortenings. Small amounts of SMO powder are added to the dry oil that is low in free fatty acids to catalyze the reaction to produce margarine. SMO catalyzed transesterfication yields products with improved consistency and also reduced melting points with ideal baking properties.

Food applications are very sensitive to impurities including the trace amounts of any mercury compounds. Our SMO powder does not contain or use any compounds containing mercury unlike other SMO products that are currently marketed.

Our process does not use either sodium metal or mercury amalgamation process instead our process uses caustic dehydration process which produces clean, food-safe SMO powder without any contaminants and is also more cost effective.

Process Technology

We use a proprietary «dehydration» technology for the manufacture of alkoxides. In Sodium Methylate manufacture, Methanol and Sodium Hydroxide flakes are mixed in methanolic/caustic preparation tanks. The solution is then fed to the reaction column heated with steam where the reaction takes place. The excess methanol vapor along with water formed during the reaction are collected from the top of the reaction column and sent to a stripping column for the recovery of methanol. The separated methanol is then recycled back to the reaction column. The water from the reaction is removed and sent to the water treatment system before discharge The sodium methylate solution taken from the bottom of the reaction column is checked for quality and sent to the storage tanks. Various grades of SMO solution are made by diluting with methanol. The dehydration process generates little or no waste and methanol emissions are mitigated by state-of-the-art control technology using refrigerated condensation and bio-filtration processes.

The dehydration process is clean, safe and environmentally friendly. Importantly, it produces high quality sodium methylate without impurities like Mercury, making our Sodium Methylate ideal for esterification reactions in food applications with the most exacting safety requirements.
