1, 2 Butanediol

1, 2 Butanediol is produced industrially by hydration of 1, 2-epoxybutane. A colorless transparent liquid that has low toxicity among glycols. It can be used as a humectant, also It is excellent in antibacterial properties that able to use as a preservative.

APPLICATIONS

1, 2 Butanediol has been patented for the production of polyester resins and plasticizers. It is a potential feed-stock for the industrial production of α-ketobutyric acid, a precursor to some amino acids. 1,2-butanediol is used as a skin conditioning agent (humectant), solvent and is used to decrease the overall viscosity of a product.

TOXICITY

Animal studies have been performed on the oral and dermal toxicity of the substance and it was shown that 1, 2-butanediol was not significantly toxic by topical administration. Irritation did occur with ocular application when pure; however irritation was not found when lowered to a concentration of 10%.
